EMDR Therapy – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Traumatic or significant life events can leave long lasting emotional and psychological impacts. EMDR is an empirically validated intervention that supports healing of the mind and body from trauma.
EMDR can bridge the gap in trauma-focused care as it utilizes the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model that recognizes differences in how traumatic memories are stored in the brain. EMDR activates the brain’s natural processing system to resolve “stuck” memories that result in emotional and psychological distress. Using bilateral stimulation, the brain can access and process unresolved memories to promote healing.
This intervention is highly effective in treating individuals that have experienced or witnessed traumatic or distressing events. Trauma can be defined as a single incident or can be the cumulative effect of various experiences across the life span. While EMDR is traditionally focused on addressing trauma, it can also be beneficial in treating depression, anxiety, and OCD.
